About Monique

Monique N. Matthews is a Los Angeles-based writer and director.  Prior to this, Monique, a Harlem, USA native, was an entertainment journalist and managing editor of a national hip-hop magazine.  Monique’s work has appeared in Ebony.com, Vibe, The Source, Slam, TV Guide, and Rap Pages, among others. She has also been a guest panelist on NPR’s “Tell Me More,” and more.  Monique transitioned into filmmaking after graduating from the UCLA School of Film and Television.  She has written for several studios including MGM, Walt Disney Pictures, and Paramount Pictures.

Monique has received several accolades including Daily Variety’s “10 Writers to Watch,” and was a two-time lab fellow in Film Independent’s prestigious Directors and Writers Labs. Monique was recently a semi-finalist in Sundance New Voices.

Monique’s journey as a filmmaker began with “It Looks Just Like You” (2010), an awareness commercial about breast cancer, which she wrote and directed, starring Omari Hardwick (Power). It has amassed nearly 800,000 views on YouTube.

Monique’s recent work includes writing A Holiday In Harlem (2021), for the Hallmark Channel, for which she received a 2022 NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Writing in a Television Movie.

Monique is currently co-writing and directing Birthing Justice, a feature-length documentary looking at birthing outcomes for Black women and children. It’s scheduled for release in 2022.

In her spare time, Monique — an avid hip-hop aficionado — enjoys cooking, exercising, surfing, and spin classes.
